All you need to know about being a CEYA Member
Why be a member?
If you would like to support the work CEYA does, being a member is the easiest way to do so.
As a member you:
- May volunteer with the organisation
- Have a say in the annual general meeting and have a vote on critical issues
- Receive monthly updates about the progress of the organisation (on which we appreciate comment)
- Are entitled to stand to be voted onto the board
Why do we have members?
As a voluntary organisation CEYA is legally required to have an active membership. Members are people who have an interest in the work being done by the organisation, who agree with the values and objectives held by the organisation, and who would like to support the work being done.
Members form the highest decision-making body of the organisation – no major changes can be made without the majority of the members agreeing. As such members are a means of ensuring that the organisation runs on sound principles in a sound manner. The “management committee” (or board) is voted on annually out of the cohort of members.
Becoming a member
To become a member you need to:
- Fill in and return the membership form that indicates you agree with the principles in the constitution and want to be a member
OR
- Send an email to our Programme Manager, Teboho (tebohonaarah@gmail.com) clearly confirming your desire to be a member and your agreement with the basic principles of the organisation. Please include your email address, phone number and full name.
You also need to pay the 2011 subscription fee of R30. This can be paid at the CEYA office (Office 9, 51 Station Road, Observatory, Cape Town) or into the CEYA bank account.

What does it take?
Members can be as active as they like. The more active members the better, but we also understand that not everyone is able to make physical or time inputs. We welcome commentary and assistance, and appreciate attendance at our two members meetings a year.
Volunteering and interning with CEYA
There are many ways in which you can volunteer or become an intern:
Join in community classes
Join in our classes – come along, give us a hand with teaching, and generally be a presence. It is ideal if you volunteer regularly with the same group of children so as to build relationships
Office administration
We always need help in the office with bits and pieces and would be more than happy to have your assistance.
Blog for our website
Write a blog about your experience with us. We need to keep the website fresh, and this is a great way for us to do it.
Transport
Assist with transport for the monthly aulao (integration class). On the last Friday of every month we have a big class in Observatory bringing children from different communities together with adults from all classes in Cape Town. We always need assistance with transport for these events.
Fundraising
Everyone has connections and fundraising is all about using those connections. If you have links to people in the funding, or corporate sector, link us up.
Food
We feed the children in our programme every day. These are simple sandwiches and healthy snacks. We could certainly use help buying and preparing these.
Offer your skills
If you have skills you think we could use (anything from accounting to marketing), please get in touch.
Volunteer policy
Volunteers must sign the volunteer agreement before volunteering (download here).
Volunteers must have a driver’s license to drive children.
Volunteers are encouraged to build relationships with the children in the programme, but care needs to be taken:
- Relationships that start through CEYA must continue through CEYA. Volunteers may not create relationships with individual children outside of the structure of the organisation. Volunteers who wish to create special relationships with individuals must do so only through the Capoeira Buddy Programme.
- There is to be no favouritism. This means that individual children cannot be given gifts or receive special attention. This is to avoid intra-group conflict, jealousies, and tensions.
- Volunteers may not drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or swear in front of the children.
- Volunteers must have a driver’s license to transport the children.
